Review: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlexTV

Google TV, Le, and ... Seagate? Hard drive manufacturers to compete in this year with the new Seagate GoFlex television, media banners, as the new Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex hard to play doubles in the living room big boys pier head. Netflix's streaming media capabilities of the box for the video codec and a lot of features some beautiful sneakernet support - but to ensure adequate expenditure, the establishment of the necessary equipment and accessories portfolio to 300 U.S. dollars? mkv converter

I gave GoFlex TV extensive than in the past two weeks, rotating, I am really impressed. It can be good as GoFlex part of the universe, but it's streaming media features, user interface and hardware features to give you more hope. This is good, the bad and the ugly, by the features:

The specification: The GoFlex TV is very small (4.3 × 5.9 × 1.6 inches), so it will not take up space on your TV set. It has an HDMI and two USB interfaces and A / V and SPDIF output. An Ethernet port for networking, but unfortunately there is no Wi - Fi. Seagate's Wi - Fi adapter is priced at 50 dollars, but the company failed to give my review. I tried it with standard 802.11g the USB Wi - Fi adapter as my TiVo's Wi - Fi adapter as well, but to no avail. Since there is no integrated Wi - Fi is a major disappointment, if you ask me, especially considering you can get 99 U.S. dollars in HD Le and Wi - Fi box.
Twist: Seagate GoFlex TV function into the company's new Gulf GoFlex drive. First, it looks a bit silly, because the drive is adhered to, but I actually started to enjoy some time after this a lot. No other drives and cables, to keep clutter to a minimum reducing the need. Of course, users can still connect via USB flash drive or memory stick.
Media player features: This is GoFlex TV light. Codec tons (XviD format, DivX's, MKV's, H.264 standard), coupled with the DVD player is like a physical disk ISO files, including the menu. Finally a very attractive, so that P2P users and people who like it, ah, support their DVD collections. Of course, this is illegal in most cases, because you will bypass the copyright protection technology.
Online Service: this small banner to visit YouTube and Netflix Inc., and the number of podcasts Flickr, Picasa, some online radio stations and some text feed. Registered users can also content from DivX and Paramount. I suspect that most users will be interested in YouTube and Netflix. Both implementations are good, but not overwhelming. Especially disappointing: Netflix realization only let me access my instant queue. Has a menu item called "into the directory", but it did not work. It is a shame, especially since the tithe, Wii, and others let you browse a complete Netflix's Watch Now catalog.
The UI: do not work, at least not for me, I do not mind ... plain, not flashy, but GoFlex TV user interface is confusing. At least three different ways to reach an application like Netflix something, but usually they are listed next to each other. On the other hand the basic installation options are so well hidden, you have to expect to find their manual.
Content: The Netflix is great, we all love YouTube, but it would be a good source of some additional content. I do not just demand of the Amazon, although it would be a good clean, but also more choices, custom online content. RSS feed of the GoFlex TV support, but they present no way to add your own video podcast. It is a shame, because the device should be able to play almost anything you throw at it.
To be honest, Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex TV seems a bit out of the door, presumably to compete with Western Digital's new media player. Advantage is that some of its shortcomings are easily addressed by Seagate. Only need a firmware update, and GoFlex possible, for example, browsing Netflix's video-on-demand directory all. UI is the same as some of the problems.

However, hardware specifications and price point can not really solve a firmware update, the largest one, the GoFlex TV can be expensive. The device itself will retail for 130 U.S. dollars, a 500GB GoFlex 120 dollars to drive, and Wi - Fi adapter set you back another 50. Suddenly, that little box do not look at all the cheap, is not it?
