Elgato's Turbo.264 HD (Macworld Conference rated 3.5 out of 5) is a hardware / software combination to accelerate video transcoding. Recently, Elgato has released the software part of the HD, respectively 50 Turbo.264 software, it performs the same as the combination of all of the features, but did not accelerate the speed and capacity, to provide from Elgato's EyeTV software to adapt to flow convert wmv.
The software accepts AVCHD format, QuickTime, and as AVI, camcorder, video, MPEG - 1, MPEG - 2 program / transport stream of MPEG - 4, the MP4, M4V. The multilateral trading system, H.263's, H.264 standard AVC, XviD format, input and Video_TS. As the name suggests, it is converted to H.264 video, including ipad company, iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, in YouTube, YouTube's high-definition, 720p, and 1080 and Sony's PSP (encoding preset, you can customize according to their preferences Preferences).
To test out the pure software version, I encoded the same three items used by software only, software / hardware combination, and the handbrake 0.9.4 32-bit version (Macworld Conference rated 4.5 out of 5). My test is how to convert I have seen your mother to iPhone formats, 43:19 720p MKV's auspicious set of Apple TV format AVI 21:08 episode, movies, and 1:38:53 (from one-party encryption Video_TS) folder using the ripit tear (Macworld as 45 only from the General Assembly) to amperometric format, all use for each target (handbrake ipad company does not have a default, so I used the Apple TV VideoTS Default Preferences folder). I also tested 2 minutes, from the 1080 Canon Vixia HF100 AVCHD camera 26 seconds of the video camera direct conversion.
All the testing is for the latest 13-inch MacBook Pro/2.4GHz (Macworld Conference as 45 only produced) running OS X 10.6.4.
Test
In fact, it is not surprising that the software only USB stick than by the slower hardware supporting software. AVI files and folders Video_TS with nearly twice as long as the coding and software, and MKV files, as long as more than 3 times. Interestingly, a higher data transfer rate of pure software code, file larger result. (Elgato said encoder chip, "are often too conservative", the company is working to make the new firmware in this respect more like the software and hardware behavior.)
The same file conversion and handbrake are all on the map. AVI file takes about 30 seconds less than the Turbo.264 to high definition conversion software, and MKV file just 15 minutes and the film 30 minutes. Handbrake also use a lower data rate, it creates the file were significantly higher than the Housing Department by the Turbo.264 is less, in most cases. (It is also worth mentioning that the Elgato software to maintain its native 1280 × 720 resolution Geely episode, Apple TV preset in handbrake conversion from the 544 to 960).
Try the camera conversion, I launched the software, pop-up from my camera to the built-in reader in my MacBook Pro, and click the Add button, the camera when it recognizes a camera to access the contents of my SD card SD card. (Elgato says you can connect USB camera to your Mac, but I tried a direct line of SD cards, and was pleased to see that it works. If in fact copied to your hard drive content on the SD card You can drag the clip and with them the exact same way.) before you can edit the clips, convert them and use it as Elgato's EyeTV software, the same interface.
You can choose to clip conversion (delete those you do not want to), and combine multiple clips into a single movie. In the latest version of software, is the event, this feature is about the same time, clip into a single group shot of the fragments appear. I opened the event and its six groups, I have my clips into one, then I use the HD 720p conversion default lunch killed the twins. Version of the software took nearly 78 percent longer than the time to encode the hardware-assisted version - with 5 minutes and 31 seconds 9 minutes and 48 seconds. (I ran directly from the SD card, and then from the local file to my hard drive - both almost the same results conversion).
Different iMovie, Turbo.264 the AVCHD high-definition content can be accessed directly, without first convert. As a person who is "imported" AVCHD in iMovie video to know - I use quotes because in fact what iMovie to do is to convert video to Apple Intermediate Codec, which makes this process the file size balloons - it may take a long time and a lot of processing power to do so. This direct access and conversion is a great feature, as long as you do not care about the advantages to the iMovie and property rights in transition subtle care.
1 Note: Because any video encoding software, rolling the video frame, and there is currently no way to turn it off. This can be distracting - not to mention spoilers induced if you do not see what your video encoding
